How To Choose a G Wagon

Let's face it. All G Wagons are awesome. But which one is right for you and your family? Here's a quick rundown on what each model offers. Our knowledgeable team is always available to discuss the many different options with you to help you determine which model would best suit your needs as well.
3-Door or 5-Door?
In Europe what we consider a 2-door is a 3-door, and what we consider a 4-door is a 5-door...just to be clear! Both variants seat up to 5 passengers. The main difference is the 3-door has a shorter wheelbase and smaller trunk area than the 5 doors. The 3-door model was never offered for sale in the United States. The 5-door model was offered beginning in 2002.
Diesel or Gas?
This is where personal preference really comes into play. The diesels offer a very different driving experience than the gas motors do. The turbo diesel variants offer more than enough get-up and go to make each ride a pleasurable one. Our team knows what to look for on each turbo diesel to ensure longevity and reliability (such as upgrading the cooling systems and more). The non-turbo diesel motors offer incredible levels of reliability and dependability however they will not provide you with the ability to drive more than 65mph or so.
Our most popular turbo diesel G Wagons are the G300 and the G350. When it comes to the gas options, we work with the 3.0 liter inline 6 offered in the early 90's-, and 3.2-liter variant offered in the G320. Both are incredible motors that provide more than enough get up and go while simultaneously offer amazing levels of dependability.
Engine Options
3-liter non-turbo diesel: This is a low output motor that is wildly reliable, however do not expect quick acceleration or brisk uphill climbs. This is however a great motor for anyone looking to drive around town or especially those looking to go off road. This motor is found in all of the ex-military models which we offer (250GD), and 300GD.
Manual or Automatic?
This is truly up to you. We have several clients who own both. This is a matter of personal preference.Â
G Wagon or Defender?
The Land Rover Defender and the Mercedes G-Wagon are both iconic off-road vehicles that have been produced for many years. However, there are some key differences between these two vehicles that may influence a person's decision to own one over the other. From 1990 to 1997, the Land Rover Defender was equipped with a 2.5-liter diesel engine that produced 111 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. It was available in both two-door and four-door configurations, with a variety of body styles and trim levels. The Defender was known for its robust construction, off-road capabilities, and simplicity of design.
 Â
On the other hand, the Mercedes G-Wagon (also known as the G-Class) from 1990 to 1997 was equipped with a 3.0-liter diesel engine that produced 125 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. It was available in both two-door and four-door configurations, and it was known for its luxurious interior, high-end features, and powerful engine.
  Â
One key difference between these two vehicles is their design philosophy. The Defender is designed for off-road performance, with a rugged and utilitarian appearance, while the G-Wagon is designed for luxury and comfort, with a refined and stylish appearance.
Â
Another key difference is their driving experience. The Defender is known for its rough ride, noisy cabin, and basic driving features, while the G-Wagon offers a smoother ride, quieter cabin, and advanced driving features such as power steering and air conditioning.
Ultimately, the choice between a Land Rover Defender and a Mercedes G-Wagon from 1990 to 1997 depends on personal preferences and needs. If you prioritize off-road performance, durability, and simplicity, then the Defender may be the better choice. If you prioritize luxury, comfort, and advanced features, then the G-Wagon may be the better choice.
